Traveling to Montrose

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

Only a short distance away and at 2,700 feet deep and 53 miles long, the Black Canyon holds plenty of excitement for explorers of all ages. Summer in the Canyon offers fishing, hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding, nature walks, campfire programs and other adventures. Winter brings a whole new set of activities including cross-county skiing, snowshoeing and backcountry camping.

The Black Canyon was originally designated a national monument in 1933. However, in 1999, it was renamed a national park, placing it in the same league as other renowned treasures like Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and Yosemite.

Ute Indian Museum

The Ute Indian Museum connects the past with contemporary Ute life and culture. Explore Ute history from the past to the present through their artifacts, videos and other exhibits through the museum. In the summer, you can explore the public gardens on an ethnobotany tour and attend special events hosted on the grounds.
